What a summer it has been! You might have noticed I've been a little silent. That's because I've been out on leave enjoying family time. But now I'm back in the saddle and ready to share exciting resources, STEM lessons, videos, workshops, and much more! 

Fall 2021 STEM Materials are updated! 

If you go to our webpage, www.tra.extension.colostate.edu you can find a ton of resources from canning to insects, 4-H, and of course STEM. 

Bubbles Galore! Kit
On our STEM pages check out the Fall 2021 STEM Kit Loan Out Listing.  Our office has over 20+ STEM kits that are self contained and provide materials for interactive, hands on learning!  A sample of some kits/topics includes: Rockets, Bubbles, Water Pollution, Soil Science, Germs, and Embryology (Chick Hatching) plus more!  All kits are available to teachers, parents, afterschool programs, etc... and most materials are supplied!

The complete listing of kits is on our webpage and a google request form is also linked to make requesting kits easier!  You can also look forward to new kits being made available each year including a Forensics kit and Straw Rockets kit coming later this fall!


You also should look at our STEM media section which will lead you to our Facebook and YouTube pages!  Check out weekly posts and videos that encourage at home STEM investigations!  Also be on the lookout for upcoming events, workshops, and activities that are open to local youth! 

Finally, be sure to keep up with this blog as you never know the topics we might cover! Because my belief is you can find ways to STEM (or STEAM) in anything!

 Soap Box Time! One of the things I think that we've lost in public education is the Home Economics training that so many young people need to function properly as adults. When I was in school, we were taught how to cook and clean, how to mend things rather than toss them away, and how to balance a check book. Today in our 'test score %' society, it's hard to find that old fashion education in any of the curriculum books. And I find that really disturbing since it's many of these basic skills that we depend upon daily to function. However, thankfully I'm not the only one this concerns. Jan 21st ~ Measuring at the Meniscus!

The New Year is here and Problem Based Learning projects (PBL's) are once again shaping up for schools in our community. This time around, we are back with Oak Grove Elementary School to work with 4th graders. I won't give away their PBL question, but they are learning how a rain gauge works and will be collecting precipitation rates all semester with the CoCoRaHS Rain Gauge donated to their school. Our (Dr. Barbara Shaw and myself) first visit was to both introduce the PBL question and to teach kids how to measure liquids in graduated cylinders, beakers, and the rain gauge. The first step when measuring water is knowing that water has adhesive properties, meaning it likes to cling to surfaces.
